James R. King, CPA, CVA, CFE

James King, CPA, CVA, CFE, is director of the Forensic Investigative Accounting Group for WebsterRogers LLP, in the Sumter, South Carolina, office. Mr. King earned a BS in business administration in 1968 from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. With the exception of three-plus years he served in the US Air Force, all of his experience has been in public accounting.

Mr. King is an active member in the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, having received the “President’s Award” in 1995. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA), the Institute of Business Appraisers, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. He is the past South Carolina State Chapter President of NACVA, and has authored and taught a course on Development of Discount/Capitalization Rates for presentation to NACVA’s Training Centers and the Internal Revenue Service, Levels of Value for presentation at NACVA’s Career Development Institutes (formerly Learning Institute), and Marital Litigation Practice from A to Z for NACVA’s Career Development Institutes.

He was elected in 1997 to a three-year term on the Executive Advisory Board (EAB) of NACVA, and served as chairman of the Conference Committee in 1998 and 1999. He currently serves on NACVA’s first Litigation Forensic Board (LFB), which has the responsibility of evaluating the content of NACVA’s litigation and forensics-related curricula to provide assurances course content remains objective, technically and fundamentally sound, and presents information in a proper perspective giving consideration to course objectives, credentialing requirements, time limitations, and other relevant factors necessary to the creation and development of well-rounded and substantive training programs. The LFB’s responsibilities are further expanded to oversee credentialing criteria, both pre- and post-requisite, for NACVA’s Certified Forensic Financial Analyst (CFFA) designation. This includes testing and grading procedures, experience requirements, reciprocity and recognition programs, quality and/or peer review, and re-certification requirements.

His speaking engagements include the 1996 NACVA National Conference (Business Valuations & Divorce: A Happy Marriage) in Phoenix, Arizona, on “Standard of Value and the Applicability of Minority and Marketability Discounts.” He also made a presentation on “Capitalization and Discount Rates” to the NACVA Learning Institute in San Diego, California, in December 1996, “Documenting Discounts in Gift & Estate Valuation” at the 1999 NACVA Litigation Symposium - Strategic Issues in Business Valuations, Damages & Litigation - For Attorneys & Valuation Experts in Chicago, and “Levels of Value” at the 2000 NACVA Annual Conference in Dallas.

In 2001, he was elected chairman of the Fair Value White Paper Committee of the Clarence Group. The Clarence Group is composed of all the major valuation organizations in North America. The five organizations participating are NACVA (National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts), AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants), ASA (American Society of Appraisers), IBA (Institute of Business Appraisers), and CICBV (Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators). The committee’s charge is to develop a white paper defining fair value for valuations in North America.

He has been providing valuation and litigation services since 1985 in a variety of settings, including matrimonial actions, shareholder disputes, estate planning, lost profits and damages, valuations of non-compete agreements, and income, estate, and gift tax valuations. He has been recognized as an expert witness by the courts and has served as a consultant to other certified public accountants and attorneys. He has rendered services in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Mr. King has written The Development of Discount/Capitalization Rate course for NACVA. He taught this course for NACVA, has spoken on valuation topics to groups in South Carolina, the 1996 NACVA National Valuation Conference on Divorce, and the 1999 NACVA Litigation Symposium-Strategic Issues in Business Valuations, Damages & Litigation - For Attorneys & Valuation Experts in Chicago.

Mr. King developed a course for NACVA, entitled Martial Litigation Practice from A to Z, which he taught in 1999 at the Learning Institutes in Hyannis Port, San Francisco, and New Orleans.
